SUNBIRD
The Palestine Sunbird (Cinnyris osea), known in Arabic as "Al-Tumayr" (طائر الشمس الفلسطيني), was adopted as the national bird of Palestine in 2015. It is a small, nectar-feeding bird, with the male characterized by its iridescent, metallic blue-green plumage and a long, slender, curved beak. The bird symbolizes Palestinian identity, freedom, and resilience.
HANDALA
Handala is an iconic, 10-year-old cartoon figure created by Palestinian artist Naji al-Ali in 1969, representing a refugee child with his back turned and hands clasped. He symbolizes Palestinian resistance, defiance, and the longing for return to Palestine, remaining barefoot and turning his face away until freedom is achieved.
WATERMELON
The watermelon is a prominent symbol of Palestinian identity and resistance, used because its colors—red, green, white, and black—match the Palestinian flag. It originated as a workaround to 1967 bans on displaying the flag.
